Whether you are recently diagnosed, or have been living with lupus for some time, it's important to know if your treatment plan is working to reduce your disease activity, or if you may be living with uncontrolled lupus. Learn about uncontrolled lupus so you know when getting in touch with your rheumatologist may be a good idea.
Lupus can affect different organ systems and can cause symptoms that are unique for everyone. There are times when the disease is very active with lots of flare-ups and times when it is less active. Even when your lupus symptoms seem to be controlled, in some instances your lupus may still be active, which can cause health risks.
Flares are a sudden worsening of your lupus symptoms, and they can also be a sign of increased disease activity.
Some common symptoms associated with lupus flares are extreme fatigue, pain or swelling in the joints, sensitivity to sunlight, rashes, including a butterfly-shaped rash on the face, general swelling in the legs, and hair loss.
If your flares are becoming more common or more severe, your lupus may be uncontrolled. Talk to your healthcare provider about any change in your flares so they can assess your current treatment plan.
Day to day it’s the same kind of thing, the achy hands and the fatigue and the sun sensitivity. But then if I get thrown into a flare…flares can be different…they can last longer, they can be more extreme...

Oral steroids are often used to control lupus disease activity. However, over time, increased steroid use can contribute to organ damage and other potential health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis.
If you’re concerned about continuous steroid use in your lupus treatment plan, talk to your healthcare provider about options to reduce your reliance on steroids.
Always talk to your doctor before stopping or changing any medications, including steroids.
I’m not a huge fan of steroids. They cause a lot of issues, but they work. They do their job…It’s a step in the process to get your flare out of the way. Sometimes the outcome of taking a steroid is better than being sicker.

Organ damage can be a consequence of living with uncontrolled lupus. Frequent flares and increased steroid use can both contribute to organ damage, which may worsen over time.
If you feel your lupus disease activity is increasing despite your current treatment plan and could be putting you at risk of organ damage, ask your healthcare provider if a change to your treatment plan may be able to help.
If I’m taking a med that affects my organs on top of…lupus, that already affects my organs. It’s a hard decision. Do I want to keep damaging my organs to make my lupus better with this med?

SAPHNELO is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with moderate to severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus) who are receiving other lupus medicines.
It is not known if SAPHNELO is effective in patients with severe active lupus nephritis or severe active central nervous system lupus. It is not known if SAPHNELO is safe and effective in patients under 18 years of age.
